Reading another blog reminded me of this experience:
SUMMER OF 2002
My wife, my 1 1/2 year old and I were travelling to Albuquerque, NM. We had completed the first leg and were preparing to board the “puddle jumper” for the last bit.
(This was before they had established areas where you had already been searched, every time you changed planes you had to be go through security.) Anyway, they make the announcement, “Those travelling with small children, those needing assistance…you may now pre-board.” (Boy was that a false statement!)
We hand off our tickets and take about three steps and the TSA (Don’t think they were called TSA yet) guy approaches and says, “Would you please step over here?”
Me: “What for?”
TSA: “We need to do a search.”
Again, my wife, myself and a 1 1/2 year old, a car seat, stroller, laptop computer, diaper bag, my wife’s purse and one more carry on. All perfectly legal at the time. I was carrying so much required/necessary stuff I could barely move.
All three of us had to remove our shoes, turn on the computer, unfold the stroller, inspect the car seat, search the diaper bag, purse and carry on. I was just barely able to keep my cool. As the other passengers walked by they gave us looks of sympathy and several were muttering about the stupidity of the search.
We were the LAST ONES on the airplane, so much for pre-boarding. Fortunately the other passengers were very considerate and left the front 3 seats for us.
We all know this was a politically correct search. White male in his 30s, white female in her 30s and let’s throw in a 2 year old for good measure. If anyone actually thinks these invasive pat downs are making you safer I have a snow skiing lodge in Oklahoma to sell you.
