Daily Devotional: Understanding Our Emotions

Prayer Starter: God, I don't want to let my emotions overpower my spirit. As I spend time with You and read Your Word, give me the power I need to be led by the Spirit not just how I feel.

Romans 8:8 and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

The author (Joyce Meyers) states:

"Emotions are the realm of the soul. Our soul is the intangible area between our spirit, the place where God lives, and our physical body. It is made up of our mind, will and emotions, it tells us what we think, what we want and how we feel. Of these three areas of the soul, it's our feelings that get stirred up the fastest."

"In other words, our God-given inner voice of insight and understanding become easily drowned out by the cries of our emotions. The Bible says that this kind of fleshly life doesn't please God. This doesn't mean God doesn't love us. What it does mean is that He is not satisfied with nor will He accept fleshly behavior."

I happen to be one who doesn't think emotions are a bad thing. God gave us these emotions, He doesn't give us things that are bad and it's our place to learn how best use them. Be angry but sin not is one scripture that tends to mess with people at times. We do need to allow these emotions to come out lest they get repressed and turn into physical pains or worse, diseases. I am currently battling some old anger that's been bottled up and is right now making my back feel miserable. Medical professionals have nothing but pain meds for it and we don't go that route. I am certain and willing to put my money where my mouth is to say I will get to the bottom of this and be pain free some day soon. In the meantime, His Grace is sufficient for me. I believe that Joyce has this a little skewed, not totally wrong, but just a tad off and I don't believe that is what Paul is saying exactly. If I could expand just a bit...

My example is something that just happened to us. Jehovah's Witnesses stopping by yesterday. They pulled into our driveway, past our sign advertising Healing Eggs for sale. They have to hear the Word playing in the barn to our chickens upon getting out of their car. But yet they still felt the need to share the Gospel with me. They asked one question, "If I could ask for one thing in the world, what would it be?" My answer was for everyone to know the width, the breadth and the depth of God's love. (Not quite the world peace answer but my version of it.) If they were being led by the Spirit  and not their emotions or in the flesh, I don't think they would have rung our bell. It was a complete waste of their time since they really didn't want what I have but were in intent on giving me what they had.

Hmmm, I simply got that I shouldn't be ruled by my emotions and should listen to God's voice and inner peace.

I certainly agree you can't keep emotions bottled up, but there are good ways and helpful ways to release the stress and emotions and not reacting or over-reacting to whatever is getting your got, so to speak.

Yes, they were meeting their quota for the day an dwere not truly concerned with you or your spiritual health.
