We spent yesterday afternoon at our church helping to set up for building Graham Cracker houses. Most people call them gingerbread houses, but we always use Graham Crackers, so....

One of the ladies in the church built 30 houses for the kids to decorate. My wife and I spent time separating at least 10 different types of candy (building material) decorations into 10-12 bowls on five different tables.

Each child received their own can of frosting to start the process. (We took the frosting and microwaved it for about 15 seconds to make it easier to spread.) There was a lot of dip, spread, and then a giant lick of the knife!

Both of my boys built a house. My oldest started early to 'test the process' for the younger kids. He wanted to do it, but didn't want to admit it. Once it was determined he was going decorate a house his best friend piped up that he wanted to do it, too.
Front
Here you have the front door with wreath, red picket fence and mailbox, plus the owner and his pet bear to the right. On the left side is a Christmas Tree with a lights and star on top.
Christmas Tree of candyPool
A little better view of the outside tree. Note the swimming pool and deck in the second picture. He even got his name written on the roof using pretzels.

Youngest's House
The youngest kids house. The Gingerbread people on the roof are still hanging decorations and the two in front are passing the decorations up. (Note the gummy bear light in one's hand.)
Side twoTeddy Bear Wall
Back of the house with a nice pretzel deck (still under construction), candy cane awning and gummy window. Oh, and don't miss the teddy bear wall! Don't know if you can see it in the picture, but he was very proud of it and mentioned it several times.

All the kids had a blast and I ate far too many decorations for my own good!

The edible home is adorable. I am sure the children enjoy decorating the homes. My goodness, the lady who made 30 homes to decorate made a great contribution to the Children.

Yes, the kids had a lot of fun and put away a lot of candy. I was afraid the decorating would be 1 to 1. One on the house one in the mouth, but most seemed more interested in decorating their homes. (Of course, they promptly began eating the homes after the pictures were taken.)

Good morning Than -

Excellent job your guys did building their Gingerbread houses.  They may just turn out to be custom builders and you can be their Broker :)  We looked at these kits at the store but decided we didn't have time to build one this year... Now I'm thinking we should have picked one up.  Fun!

So cute and what a fun activity for the kids. Our kids always decorate them at home and I remember their kindergarten classes did graham cracker houses. Somehow ours don't usually make it to Christmas without vital parts being eaten right off the house.

What a fun looking project that should be delicious down the road!     It is fun to do this in a group and watch the creativity put into these gingerbread houses!

Some of the kids get really creative and some are very precise. And others are more interested in eating than decorating!

Hi Than,

What a great church event and I am sure the kids and adult had a great time. Those are some nice houses and the kids should be proud of them. Thanks so much for sharing and may you and your family have a blessed holiday. Let us not forget the true meaning of Christmas and dwell on commercialism. I get so caught up in shopping and baking so I sometimes forget but of course I always have him in my heart.
