Norman, OK rates as the #1 least expensive urban area in the nation! The really nice thing is you can go 5-15 minutes south of Norman and find several small towns that are even less expensive to live in! Noble, Lexington, Purcell, Goldsby, Washington and Blanchard are all quick access to the metropolitan area (Oklahoma City, Norman, Moore, Del City, Midwest City, Edmond) and cost considerably less than Norman. 

For example, homes can typically be purchased for around $10 less per square foot in these smaller communities and you will typically end up with a larger lot and more space between your neighbors.

Among the 306 urban areas that participated in the third quarter 2013 Cost of Living Index, the after-tax cost for a

professional/managerial standard of living ranged from more than twice the national average in New York

(Manhattan) NY to almost 18 percent below the national average in Norman, OK. The Cost of Living Index

is published quarterly by C2ER – The Council for Community and Economic Research.

The Cost of Living Index measures regional differences in the cost of consumer goods and services,

excluding taxes and non-consumer expenditures, for professional and managerial households in the top

income quintile. It is based on more than 90,000 prices covering 60 different items for which prices are

collected quarterly by chambers of commerce, economic development organizations, and university

applied economic centers in each participating urban area. Small differences should not be interpreted as

showing a measurable difference.

The composite index is based on six component categories – housing, utilities, grocery items,

transportation, health care, and miscellaneous goods and services.

The quarterly Cost of Living Index is available by subscription for $165 per year for the print version and

This information should attract more retirees to the Norman area. Finding a more affordable option is very important for many seniors.

Sounds good for the retired person, but how about for the growing family.  This also makes me wonder if there are any living wage jobs in the area

Than...I don't mean to sound negative, because this is good for some, but it is a question i have asked myself before when I have seen other lists.

I agree William. There are always positive and negative sides. The point is it takes a whole lot less money to make a 'living wage' here and if you have a retirment income coming in it is very inexpensive to relocate and live here.

Kind of like my idea of moving to Belize it is cheap living down there, but you have to have the income and be able to make the move!

 Here in Katy people would love more space between homes; if they come from other parts of the country, they cannot believe how close the homes are here!
