Hummingbird Moth

It took me a little while to figure out what it was. We had just started planting flowers and hanging baskets when this little fellow showed up.

Has to be a hummingbird right? Look at those wings go!

Of course that day I didn't have my camera handy and missed the chance to get a good shot.

The weather turned cool again and for several days there was no sign of him. Until yesterday and I had my good camera ready:

I left this one maxed out so you can see the antenna.

Hey Than...I think but am not sure, this is a sphinx Moth.   Very similar to the Hummingbird moth.

I got a great pic of the hummingbird moth last year and I will try and find it and post it here.

But...I could be wrong on this.

Wow that is awesome pics. I have actually seen one of these in my back yard from time to time. Had no idea what it was but it resembeled the humming bird.

Hi Than,

I have never seen one as far as I remember but I must keep my eyes open. I wonder if they like the nectar in the flower like the hummingbirds do? Great photos Than.

I agree with the moth blog. We too saw these last year and then found it wasn't a hummingbird,

Than, they are the coolest moths!  We have them here as well and you are right, you have to look twice to see they are not a bird.  Great shots!
